Help with HipStyles

If you have any problems with HipStyles, please check if this page contains something useful. Also, you can send feedback from inside the application (Settings, Contact / Send feedback).

This page has been updated for HipStyles 2.0. At the bottom you will find information specific to HipStyles 1.x, but you should definitely upgrade – it’s free for existing users.

Occasional crash when indexing

When you first start HipStyles, it indexes your phone’s Camera Roll into its own internal database. None of the information is ever transferred outside of HipStyles, so you don’t need to worry. It’s only used to find photos taken with Hipstamatic.

Sometimes HipStyles may crash during the indexing phase, and that can be a little frustrating. It’s also difficult to know why the crash occurs, so if you’re experiencing this, please contact us at hipstyles (at) coniferproductions (dot) com, and we’ll work with you in solving the problem.

Most likely the crash occurs due to a photo that has unexpected metadata. (For an explanation of the metadata in photos taken with your iPhone, head over to iDownloadBlog for an explanation.) Check your photo library to see if there is a photo (or several) taken with a very early version of Hipstamatic. Anything after version 260 should be fine, because that’s when HipStyles was created. But we don’t have records of the metadata created by older Hipstamatic versions than that, so it could be anything.

If you have such photos, please send a few our way (and don’t strip out the metadata) so we can have a look inside. Also, we’ll try to make the indexing more “defensive” in future updates.

Where did the Instagram section go?

In HipStyles 2.0, we have removed the ability to search Instagram for Hipstamatic photos. Based on feedback from you guys, we didn’t think it was worth it, and wanted to simplify.

For example, a prominent Hipstagrapher said: “I don’t care about finding pictures from other users with the same combo”. Others told that they mainly got HipStyles to help them find the HipstaPrints on their camera roll and wanted to search inside their iPhone only.

So, the Instagram search is gone in 2.0, but you can still share your own shots to Instagram, of course.

Cannot access photos

Please make sure that HipStyles has access to your photo library. On first use you should get an alert if your permission is needed, but in case of problems you should check the status just to be sure, and grant access if necessary.

To allow HipStyles access to your HipstaPrints album, go to your phone’s Settings. Select Privacy, then Photos, and make sure the setting is ON for HipStyles.

Contact us

If you have persistent problems, please contact us. The easiest way to do it is from inside HipStyles, using the “Send feedback” option in the Settings screen. You can also send e-mail to hipstyles (at) coniferproductions (dot) com.

Please try to describe the problem in as much detail as you can, as that really helps us in trying to find out what the cause might be. Also include your device model and the iOS version it is running.

Information specific to HipStyles 1.x (OBSOLETE! Please update to 2.0!)

This section has some legacy information which applies only to the 1.x versions of HipStyles. If you haven’t updated to HipStyles 2.0 yet, don’t wait! For help with HipStyles 2.0, see the top of this page.

No photos found

If HipStyles doesn’t seem to find any photos for you, here is a quick list of suggestions about remedies to try.

First, wait just a little. We know, you can’t wait. Neither can we. But if you have a slow network connection (for example, 3G or 2G instead of WLAN), it could take a while before any photos are found. Also, if your combo is quite rare, it just might be that not many people have taken photos with it recently, so HipStyles needs to look a little harder. Sometimes it may need to give up altogether, because we don’t want to drain your battery or eat all of your mobile data plan by looking for photos that might not even exist.

Try to reset your combo using the Reset button in the top right corner of the Combo screen. This will find you many photos fast if network conditions are favorable (see above).

Tap the “refresh” button in the top right corner of the Photos screen to restart the photo fetch.

If HipStyles can’t find any photos in your HipstaPrints album, check that you actually have photos in there, and that at least some of them match your combo selection (you can always reset your combo to check). Also, if you have quite many photos in your HipstaPrints album, it could simply take a while to go through them all. We are working on improvements to this.

Please note that HipStyles only searches for photos inside the HipstaPrints album. Many people have lots of non-Hipstamatic photos in their iPhone camera roll, and it would make it slow to go through them all, when the Hipstamatic photos can be neatly grouped in the HipstaPrints album. (Remember that photos on the iPhone can be in many albums at once without duplication.) See this Hipstamatic support article for details.

If nothing of the above works, try shutting down and restarting HipStyles. If you don’t know how, follow these instructions: double-press on your iPhone’s Home button to get the list of running apps. Find HipStyles (you may need to scroll sideways) and give it a long press. It should start to wiggle a bit and show a little red “delete” indicator in the left hand corner of the icon. Tap it to shut down the app. Then double-press the Home button and start HipStyles.

Status code 500

Sometimes you may get an alert with the following message:

Could not download Instagram photo information. Expected status code in (200-299), got 500.

This typically means that the Instagram service has some temporary trouble. The numeric codes in the message refer to HTTP status codes, and 500 means “Internal server error”. As this is not a problem with HipStyles, your best option is to try again a little later.

App shuts down

If HipStyles shuts down unexpectedly, it may have “crashed”. There are various reasons for that, and we are interested in hearing as much as possible about what you were doing and when. It would help us improve the app for you and all other users too.

In the event of an app crash we may want to contact you to get some further information (such as iTunes crash logs). The best way to link with us for that purpose is to send a feedback e-mail (see “Contact us” below).

IMPORTANT 2012-12-20: If you experience frequent crashes, check if the following conditions hold:

  • You have HipstaPrints taken when your phone was set to one of those non-English languages that Hipstamatic is available in. As of Hipstamatic version 260, they are: Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish).
  • You are using HipStyles version 1.0.1 or earlier.

This problem is due to the fact that Hipstamatic inserts localized metadata information into the photo. That is, if your phone’s language was French and Hipstamatic was available in French at the time when the photo was taken, the information will say something like “Objectif Jane, Film Pistil, sans flash”, whereas in English it would say “Jane Lens, Pistil Film, No Flash”.

This problem is fixed in HipStyles version 1.0.2, which will be available in January 2013. If you like, you can check the metadata in your photos using some of the EXIF metadata viewers available on the App Store.

In HipStyles 1.0.3 we were able to fix an issue that caused the app to crash if you had hundreds of Hipstamatic photos. Our filtering algorithm was using too much memory too fast, and HipStyles got shut down by iOS because of that. To the user this manifested as a crash… But it’s a lot better in version 1.0.3, so please update!

Cannot access HipstaPrints photos

Please make sure that HipStyles has access to your photo library. On first use you should get an alert if your photos are inaccessible, but in case of problems you should check the status just to be sure, and grant access if necessary.

To allow HipStyles access to your HipstaPrints album, go to your phone’s Settings. Select Privacy, then Photos, and make sure the setting is ON for HipStyles.

This is where you can also control other applications’ access to your photos.
